CARE AND MAINTENANCE

Your new windows and doors will be subject to weather, dirt and debris over time. Annual and bi-annual maintenance of your products is necessary to ensure they maintain their optimal performance. Improper maintenance can result in air and/or water infiltration, premature wear on hinges, operators and other mechanical components and may void your warranty.

All exterior sealed joints on windows and doors should be checked yearly. Caulking should be inspected to ensure it is still in contact with both adjoining surfaces, has not shrunk, cracked or fallen out. If caulking needs to be replaced clean off the old caulking as well as possible and apply a good quality, window grade, exterior sealant.

Coastal properties will require more care and maintenance due to high exposure to extreme weather conditions.

VINYL WINDOWS

It is recommended that twice per year (in spring and fall) you clean your window glass, tracks and hardware, which may collect dust and debris over time. Keeping these clean ensures smooth operation, allows proper drainage and extends the life of the sashes and hardware. Keep any tracks and drainage holes clean and free of debris at all times. Only use mild soap and water or proper glass cleaners to clean the glass. Vinyl should be cleaned with a soft cloth, mild soap and warm water. Use mild soap and water to clean hardware, rinsing well to remove any residue and drying thoroughly before lubricating.  Avoid abrasive or chemical cleaners which could strip coatings and other components of your windows. It is recommended that a lithium grease is used on operating arms, while a silicone lubricant is used on hinges, locks and rollers.

Interior screens can be removed in the winter months to avoid damage and to allow proper air flow on glass. Screens can be vacuumed with a soft brush attachment or washed gently with mild soap and water.

ENTRANCE DOORS

As with windows, Global recommends cleaning down your glass, slabs and frames, at least twice yearly, to clear away any dust or debris that may have built up over a period of time. Keep any sill drainage tracks clear and free from debris at all times. Warm soapy water or non-abrasive cleaners can be used for cleaning glass, steel and vinyl surfaces. Like anything mechanical, we advise that any moving parts be lubricated at least once every 12 months. A simple spray of lubricant, such as Jig-a-Loo, on door hinges and locks should ensure a longer lifespan for your new doors.

In the colder months, especially in frigid temperatures, some entrance doors, like a typical car door, can freeze closed to their weather strip. In these cases, we suggest adding a fine layer of Vaseline/Grease to the weather strip and sweep prior to any sudden drop in temperature to prevent your door from freezing shut.

Depending on usage and exposure of your entrance doors it is recommended that weather stripping, sweeps and all other wearable parts are replaced every 3 to 7 years to maintain optimal performance.
